County residents can submit an open records request at the Records Department, located at the Lubbock County Detention Center. It provides public access to a variety of records, including arrest records and police reports. The Lubbock County Sheriff's Office serves as the main law enforcement agency for the county. Incidences of motor vehicle theft increased by 20.79% while larceny-theft, assault, rape, and robbery decreased by 8.8%, 4.42%, 9.09%, and 17% respectively. Compared to 2016, the year-to-year crime total decreased by 7.38%, dropping from 21,561 offenses. Assaults were the most common type of violent crime. Larceny-theft accounted for most reports with 9,052 incidents, making it the most common property crime. According to records released in 2017, Lubbock County recorded a total of 20,244 offenses. The Texas Department of Public compiles and publishes data statistics for the state.
